“These six things doth the LORD hate; yes, seven are an abomination unto Him: A proud look, a lying tongue. . .a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among Brethren” (Proverbs 6:16a, 19).

Discord: a contest or quarrel, brawling, strife, contention

By continuing in the Apostles’ Doctrine we stay true to the desires of the LORD’s heart; and avoid being entangled in the present contention in the contests of men. We can live above the fray, above the quarreling, brawling and strife of tongues.

The Apostle warns us, “Now I beseech you, Brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the Doctrine which you have learned and avoid them” (Romans 16:17). Paul also declared to the Church at Corinth: “Now I beseech you Brethren, by the Name of our LORD Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind, and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Discord is out of harmony. Discord is like fingernails on a chalkboard. It just makes you react with repulsion to an unhealthy, unholy and dissonant environment. Avoid it like the plague.

The word Discord comes from the Latin dis cord (heart); expressing negation, reversal of the heart. The one who sows discord has a bad heart. Jesus said “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew 15:19). Sowing seeds of discord comes from evil thoughts of the heart for the purpose of causing division and doing harm to the community at peace.

Discord comes from an evil heart with evil intent, to divide, to cause division among us, to pit one against another based on all manner of criteria of the offenders choosing.

Pray for wisdom and discernment. Overcome evil with good, out of a good heart. Be perfectly joined together in the faith; show forth the love of God to your neighbor. Then watch what harmonious melodies the LORD will sing over us in the unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace.
