The Tree of Life

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the Tree of Life also in midst of the Garden, and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” (Genesis 2:9).

Life: (Heb. Chay Khah-ee): Alive, Fresh, Strong, Living

The Tree of Life is eternal. The Tree of Life is Spirit. The Tree of Life is eternal life in the Spirit.

There is a promise of God to us in the Word that overwhelms our hearts that tells us we can have this eternal life simply by believing in the Son of God. Not by works, or sacrifices, not by ritual or following the traditions of men, but by simple faith in the Son.

The Tree of Life was in the midst of the Garden, yet there is no evidence in the Scriptures that Adam ever ate of it. Supporting this is the Genesis record saying, “And the Lord God said, ‘Behold, the Man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take of the Tree of Life and eat and live forever'” (Genesis 3:22). Immediately after the Fall of Man the Lord had to get Adam out of the Garden lest he had eaten of the Tree of Life and lived forever in his fallen state (cf. Genesis 3:24).

According to John’s Revelation the Tree of Life “is in the midst of the Paradise of God” (cf. Revelation 2:7) and is now freely available to the overcoming believer who prevails in his faith in Christ Jesus. This promise of God is witnessed to by the Spirit of Truth. Therefore, His witness is true and faithful in every way.

The blessed state of the Redeemed who live forever by the Tree of Life is an eternal promise that cannot be broken. Our blessed assurance of this hope fulfilled gives great joy and happiness to the soul; it refreshes the spirit and gives strength to the weary one who perseveres in life through many trials and temptations in this present age.

Eternal Life. The Tree of Life is Eternal Life and is freely available to all who believe:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Eternal Life is a gift of God through Christ as the Apostle stated in his Epistle to the Romans: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Eternal Life is the fresh, strong and living Life in the Spirit of God. It is a Tree of Life for it grows and comes forth out of the Spirit from the precious seed of the Word, the Son.

The Tree of Life gives us wisdom (Proverbs 3:18); the fruit of righteousness (Proverbs 11:30); and a wholesome tongue (Proverbs 15:4). The leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the Nations (Revelation 22:2).

The Apostle encouraged his son in the faith, Timothy, with the words: “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto you are also called, and has professed a good profession before many witnesses” (I Timothy 6:12).

Indeed, lay hold of the Tree of Life, partake of the fruit thereof and live in the Spirit. This is our inheritance in Christ, our Lord. This is what He restored to us from the Fall. This pleases the Father, and it is His great desire that we live our lives in communion with Him.
